Chikankari

Chikankari, the pride of Uttar Pradesh, is a GI Certified embroidery tradition that traces its origins to the royal courts of the Mughal era. Introduced by Empress Noor Jahan, this delicate hand embroidery flourished in Lucknow, becoming synonymous with timeless grace and craftsmanship. What makes Chikankari truly unique is its intricate white-on-white embroidery, where over 32 different stitches like bakhiya, phanda, murri, and jaali are skilfully executed by artisans to form floral motifs, vines, paisleys, and geometric textures. Traditionally done on muslin, today Chikankari adapts beautifully to fabrics like georgette, cotton, chiffon, and silk, marrying elegance with comfort.

Beyond beauty, Chikankari embodies the quiet resilience and artistry of thousands of karigars who have inherited this craft through generations. The GI (Geographical Indication) tag not only validates the authenticity of Chikankari but also protects its cultural and economic significance. Each handcrafted piece is a celebration of slow fashion, labour-intensive, sustainable, and rich with identity. Whether it's a breezy kurta, a refined saree, or a modern co-ord set, Chikankari continues to evolve while honouring its roots in India's artisanal heritage.
